See where this sits in the topic map →Summary AI-generated
- TL;DR
- The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is a strategic management tool used to create, discuss, challenge, and redesign business models. The ELIXIR-PT node assembled a team to apply this tool to explore and structure their operational strategies.
- Problem
- Public information from the websites of ELIXIR-PT and the ELIXIR Hub needed to be organized and evaluated to understand how these entities function when viewed as businesses.
- Method
- The team manually extracted perceived information from public websites to populate two initial Business Model Canvases, followed by group discussions to challenge and refine the models using a unified language until consensus was reached.
- Results
- The exercise highlighted how core values relate to planned activities, resources, and partnerships, identifying competences in Woody Plants and Elixir Branding as proposed values alongside stronger relations with the Bioengineering and Biomedical communities.
- Contributions
- The work produced agreed business models for both ELIXIR-PT and the ELIXIR Hub, refining their value propositions and the interrelations among their structural elements.
- Limitations
- Not specified in the abstract.
- Takeaways
- While the models can undergo further refinement, the ELIXIR-PT model can already be used to inform strategic thinking for the ongoing building of BIODATA.PT, a major infrastructural support under the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures.
- Applications
- Strategic planning and business model development for research infrastructures.
- Topics
- Business Model Canvas; ELIXIR-PT; Strategic Management; Research Infrastructures
- For industry
- Life Sciences and Research Infrastructures
- Why it matters
- Provides a structured approach to align core values, activities, and partnerships for scientific research nodes and infrastructures.
Abstract
The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is strategic management tool that is used in handling business models in environments where they need to be created, discussed, challenged and possibly redesigned.
The ELIXIR-PT node assembled a team to use this tool in a challenging discussion. The exercise consisted in using perceived information manually extracted from the public websites of the ELIXIR-PT and ELIXIR Hub to populate two improvised BMC. Then, we used group discussions to challenge and refine these models until the majority around the table agreed on the successive modifications.
The agreed models represent what is perceived from the websites, if we were to define them as businesses, with terms chosen by the team in an attempt to use a unified language, and to refine the value propositions and the relations with the other elements of the models.

The ELIXIR-PT Business Model
The technique was used to highlight the way in which the identified core values relate with the planned activities, resources and partnerships.
Competences in Woody Plants and Elixir Branding emerged as proposed values, while the enhancement of the relations with the Bioengineering and Biomedical communities were identified as important targets for the generation of added value.
This model can undergo further refinements, but it can already be used to inform and think strategically about the ongoing building of BIODATA.PT (the major infrastructural support of the node in the scope of the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures).

The ELIXIR Hub Business Model
